Different Typologies, Similar Satisfaction: Relocation to Single-Family and Multi-Family Social Housing in Colombia and Chile

Authors

Abstract

Recent research suggests a relationship between post-relocation residential satisfaction in informal settlement dwellers and the housing typology of social housing. The aim of this study is to examine this relationship, through the analysis of two housing complexes in Manizales, Colombia and Concepción, Chile. According to the theoretical framework, lower satisfaction is predicted in the multifamily typology compared to the single-family one with respect to housing, neighborhood, neighbors, and the residential environment (dependent variables), due to greater perceived deficits in security, social relations, housing expenses, spatial attributes, and environmental comfort (independent variables). The methodological approach is quantitative, and the time horizon is cross-sectional. The data collection method was a survey. Median tests and/or the Mann-Whitney U test were used as analytical techniques to detect differences in dependent and independent variables between typologies, as well as binary logistic regression to establish the relationship between the variables (dependent and independent) within each typology. The results show that the satisfaction of relocated residents with the dimensions of the residential environment does not differ significantly between single-family and multifamily typologies, since their determinants are assessed in a very similar way in both.
