Las viviendas construidas sin la supervisión profesional adecuada, conocidas como autoconstrucciones, a menudo presentan deficiencias que pueden afectar la calidad del aire interior, contribuyendo al aumento de la concentración de contaminantes microbiológicos en el aire. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar la relación entre los aspectos constructivos de la vivienda y la calidad del aire en un conjunto de hogares de niños asmáticos en la ciudad de Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brasil. La metodología incluyó levantamientos físicos y fotográficos, inspección visual de la presencia de moho en las viviendas y muestreo de hongos en el aire. Los resultados mostraron altos niveles de humedad en las viviendas, así como ventanas en los dormitorios con áreas de ventilación e iluminación natural por debajo del mínimo recomendado por la legislación brasileña. La concentración de hongos en el aire superó el límite establecido por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en 29 de las 56 viviendas analizadas. Este estudio busca contribuir a la comprensión del vínculo entre las condiciones de vivienda y la salud humana, resaltando la necesidad de mejorar los estándares de construcción para mitigar problemas respiratorios y mejorar la calidad de vida.
