Results of research works related with the urban planning and development, and their contribution to the sustainability of the human settlements in urban areas of arid and seismic zones are exposed. A practical tool is presented to the approach of the urban study, denominated Characteristic Urban Bands (BUC) that allows to characterize with enough precision the configuration and space structure of a human settlement, facilitating the study of the urban frame and its evolution. The BUC were determined based on the analysis of the more representative urban indexes of the space conformation of the city. These Bands constitute an effective tool for the study of a city and to make medium and long term proposals for a sustainable development allowing to correct anomalies and to generate volume-space tendencies, for the achievement of an harmonic and planned, in space and time, development.
